Find Time for Your Own Personal Growth

Many of us spend most of our time focused on those around us and work rather than on ourselves. When we finally carve out time for ourselves, the last thing we want to do is work on ourselves. In the meantime, issues and difficulties we are having continue to build.

It’s challenging to face parts of us that hurt, that feel vulnerable or angry. It’s a lot easier to just keep coasting…Right?

Just take a moment right now and think about what it feels like to overcome the obstacles that hold you back. How does that make you feel? If it’s something YOU want, then here are some things you can do to start the self-growth process.

  • Take time to sit and plan out how you want to grow: You have to make a plan to make it happen. What kind of support do you need? What kind of resources? Keep in mind elements may change over time.
  • Be realistic: I can’t stress this one enough. We expect change instantly as a society, and when it doesn’t go the way we think it should, we quit. Depending on what you’re working on it could take some time. But it’s time worth working on.
  • Make time for growth: This is one of the most important steps, as you can’t grow if you don’t have time for it. Schedule growth into your calendar and treat it as you would your work. Find a quiet space without distractions, turn your phone off or put it in another room and make your space welcoming. You can start small if you like and schedule 15-30mins once or twice a week and build from there.
  • Don’t stop when it gets hard: Be prepared that when looking inward there will be parts of you that want to run or pack in the towel. Don’t go into this with a fixed mindset, be open to the ebbs and flows. Give yourself the space to process.
  • Ask for help or guidance: No man is an island. You don’t need to carry this alone, there are many people and professionals that can help you along the way. There are great online communities, therapists, resources and coaches who can help to guide you through.
  • Have a strong support system: Having people to talk to in a safe space is important. Whether it be friends, family or a coach, it’s important to have a judgment free environment.

Working on yourself isn’t always easy but it’s one of the most rewarding things you can do. YOU are worth the work!
