Coaching is at the centre of all our programming and how we do business. A Coaching approach can have a profound impact on DEI because it is based on a few powerful principles:

Certified coaches and dietitians

Clients are connected with a certified coach or dietitian who embraces a holistic wellness philosophy that involves working with individuals from an “inside out approach”: achieving small, incremental steps based on the individual’s goals, readiness, values, beliefs, pace, and tolerance to change and priorities.

A weight positive, health and wellbeing approach to weight management

Health and well-being have many dimensions, including physical, mental, emotional, social, spiritual, economic, environmental and educational. Though obesity it a risk factor for several chronic diseases, at 12 Weeks we understand that weight is only one indicator and not a simple predictor of a person’s health status.(1)

We recognize that focusing only on weight has limitations as weight is influenced by many factors, including genetics, stress , hormones, diet and lifestyle, sleep, stage of life, health conditions, physical activity, and environment(4).

We use an integrated approach that offers coaching around balanced nutrition vs. restricting food, encouraging mindful and intuitive eating, increasing activity, and promoting positive body image.

Research shows that weight loss is often not sustainable. As many as two-thirds of people who intentionally lose weight will regain more weight than they initially lost (3).

In fact, the obsession with achieving a specific weight can often lead to negative self-image and perpetuate an unhealthy cycle of body dissatisfaction. In contrast, research shows that body satisfaction and freedom from weight based stigma are linked to reduced risk for unhealthy dieting practices, sedentary behaviours, eating disturbances and weight gain. Furthermore, people who feel good about themselves and their bodies are more likely to have healthy self-esteem and adopt healthy lifestyle attitudes and behaviours.

12 Weeks embraces a weight positive, health and wellbeing approach to weight management. Our coaching focuses on:

  • Health enhancing behaviors and developing a healthy relationship with one’s body and weight.
  • A non-dieting approach that focuses on the relationship with food and the body by using intuitive eating tools, debunking food rules and focusing on physical activity.
  • Empowering our clients and increasing their confidence to take forward action without using their body weight as a measure of success.

Our coaching is guided by the following principles:

  • As weight is not a behaviour, we use alternate goals for behaviour change.
  • Healthy eating and physical activity are important for health, regardless of BMI.
  • Healthy bodies come in different sizes and shapes.
  • It is important to encourage self-esteem, body satisfaction and respect for size diversity.
